On 18 August 1951, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was founded at Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. It was the result of the dream of then Indian prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru of making a self dependent modern India and the perseverance of then chief minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy and educationists Humayun Kabir, Jogendra Singh, and the Sarkar Committee headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar. The idea was to train engineers and scientists to rebuild India. Later, 22 more IITs were also established.
